It is with profound sadness that we announce that John Hanigan passed away on Saturday, March 8, after a brief, yet valiant fight against cancer. He will be deeply and dearly missed.
John was the beloved husband of Sharon Hanigan and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, one daughter, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Our hearts go out to all of John’s family members as we grieve the passing of such a tremendous individual. We ask that you please keep John’s family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
John began his professional career with an accounting firm in St. Louis, MO. In 1975, John moved back to Lincoln and joined the firm of Gruntorad and Company, where he was admitted into partnership in 1980. He served as Managing Partner of the firm, which was eventually renamed to Hanigan Bjorkman and Ecklund LLP (now HBE Becker Meyer Love LLP), from 1988 through 2001. Prior to his passing, John served as Member and Chief Compliance Officer of HBE Investment Advisors LLC, as well as mentor and leader to HBE’s entire team of professionals.
Not only did John have incredible business instincts, he also possessed the unique ability to connect with his clients as both a highly respected advisor as well as a supportive friend. He took special interest in the success and happiness of others and his leadership, which was an example to all who worked with him, was instrumental in establishing our firm’s culture. John’s legacy of integrity, honesty, and sincerity will continue to guide our firm.
In addition to his extensive community involvement, John was an active and respected member of the Lincoln Catholic Diocese, specifically within Saint Peter’s Catholic Church. A modest, yet earnest and generous man, John gave freely of his time, talent, and treasure, with no expectation for acknowledgement or recognition. A 1964 graduate of Pius X Catholic High School, he remained dedicated to ensuring the school’s lasting legacy throughout his life.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 4500 Duxhall Boulevard, Lincoln.
